Created in color pencil on toned paper
Cornrows are known for their ultimate protective styling and/or setting up a strong hair system for more elaborate styles and installation. Unfortunately too often, they were considered one of the most “inappropriate” or “distracting” hairstyles for professional or school environments steeped in oppressive systems.
As I drew this piece, I meditated on the historical importance, power, and beauty of cornrows. Often hidden messages and mapping could be part of the styling, and now I view the repetition and twisting as a visual mantra to centre ourselves.
